Tell the story of rural China
Laotu is a social enterprise that leads at the cutting-edge market for responsible consumption and promotes a new sustainable development scheme for China and the world. We provide a platform for ecologically produced agricultural products to reach urban customers, and help connect rural and urban residents via ecotourism and educational programs. We believe that by telling stories of rural China, and by being on the ground with local communities, we can promote a new dialogue between the rural and urban, and help us understand the culture, environment, and economics of rural China.
Laotu was founded at the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago. It is now based in Shenzhen, China.
What we do
1. Story-telling: Laotu tells stories of agricultural products, farming, rural lifestyle, and everything about rural China. Laotu was one of the exhibitors participated in the 2017 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture. In May 2018, Laotu organized a special exhibition to commemorate the 10th year anniversary of the Wenchuan Earthquake. We are currently filming a documentary on the 40 years of China Economic Reform together with Phoenix Television and CCTV.
2. Agricultural marketing: connects farmers with consumers, and transfers ecologically produced agricultural products from farm to market.
3. Design and conduct ecotourism and educational projects: Laotu has ongoing projects at several national parks of China, including Wolong National Nature Reserve, Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve, and Qilian Mountain National Nature Reserve. We also conduct rural development programs in Shanxi, Chongqing, Zhejiang, Anhui, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. In urban area, we develop environmental education programs, aiming to help urban dwellers to experience nature, the arts, and rural culture.
Founded at the Booth Business School, University of Chicago, Laotu was awarded with Innovation Prize by China Charity Exhibition, and has been enlisted on Rice Donate (米公益), Xiaotidazuo (小题大作), Yihuzhu (益互助) and MOMENTUM (一初教育).
